The processing fee as published, plus the 18% GST charged on top of it.

The short answer

  • The processing fee is capped at ₹6,500 plus GST — ₹7,670.
  • It is a flat cap, not a percentage. Every other lender we track charges 1.5% to 5% of the loan.
  • On a ₹20 lakh loan that is ₹7,670 here against ₹1,18,000 at Kotak Mahindra Bank.
  • This is a fixed-rate loan, so closing it early may cost you. Golden Edge allows it after 12 EMIs.

A capped fee beats a lower rate on a big loan

HDFC Bank caps its personal loan processing fee at ₹6,500 plus GST — ₹7,670. Every other lender we track charges a percentage of the loan, from 1.5% at State Bank of India to 5% at Kotak Mahindra Bank.

On ₹5 lakh the difference is small: ₹7,670 here against ₹8,850 at SBI or ₹29,500 at Kotak.

On ₹20 lakh it stops being small. HDFC Bank still charges ₹7,670. Kotak charges ₹1,18,000. That is ₹1,10,330 more, on the same loan — and it never appears in a comparison that ranks lenders by interest rate.

To put that in context, ₹1,10,330 is roughly nine months of EMI on a ₹5 lakh five-year loan. The fee structure is not a small print detail.

The fee is deducted, not billed

The processing charge comes out of your loan before the money reaches you. On a ₹5 lakh loan you get about ₹4,92,330 but you owe ₹5 lakh, and interest builds on the full amount for the whole term.

So the real cost of borrowing is slightly higher than the rate you were quoted — and much higher when the fee is a percentage. A 5% fee on ₹20 lakh means you receive ₹18,82,000 and pay interest on ₹20 lakh for up to six years. The advertised rate has not changed. What you actually got for it has.

Stamp duty is charged separately, at your state’s rates, and is not part of the processing fee.

What it costs to close early

This is a fixed-rate loan. The RBI rule banning prepayment and foreclosure charges covers floating-rate loans to individuals, so it does not apply here. A charge to close early is allowed.

HDFC Bank publishes its own terms instead. Under the Golden Edge programme, after you pay at least 12 EMIs you can close the loan fully or partly against the outstanding principal. That is a programme benefit the bank decides and can change. It is not a right you hold.

So before you sign, ask what closing early costs at month 6, month 12 and month 24. Get the answer in writing. On a loan you expect to clear early, that answer can matter more than the interest rate.

Common questions

What is the processing fee on an HDFC Bank personal loan?
Up to ₹6,500 plus GST, which is ₹7,670. It is a flat cap rather than a percentage of the loan — the only one in our table of 8 lenders — and it is taken out of the amount paid to you rather than billed separately.
Which lender has the cheapest personal loan processing fee?
HDFC Bank, on any loan above about ₹4.3 lakh, because its fee is capped at ₹7,670 with GST while every other lender we track charges a percentage. On ₹20 lakh that is ₹7,670 here against ₹35,400 at State Bank of India and ₹1,18,000 at Kotak Mahindra Bank.
Can I close an HDFC Bank personal loan early for free?
Not as a right. The RBI ban on prepayment charges covers floating-rate loans, and this is a fixed-rate loan. HDFC Bank offers its own Golden Edge terms instead, letting you close the loan fully or partly after 12 EMIs. Confirm the charge in writing before signing.
