There is no legal minimum income for a credit card in India. The Reserve Bank sets no income floor and no minimum credit score. Each issuer picks its own bar, and it does not have to publish it. What RBI does mandate is the process: the issuer must assess your independent financial means before it gives you a limit, and it must have your written consent first.
What are the RBI rules on credit card eligibility?
The rules sit in the RBI Master Direction on credit and debit cards, issued in 2022. Four clauses matter to an applicant.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Written consent. | “The written consent of the applicant shall be required before issuing a credit card” (Para 6(a)(viii)). A one-time password counts. A phone call from a salesperson does not. |
| No unsolicited cards. | “The issue of unsolicited cards/upgradation is strictly prohibited” (Para 6(a)(iv)). If a card arrives that you never asked for, you do not owe anything on it. |
| Independent means. | The issuer must “independently assess the credit risk while issuing cards to persons, taking into account independent financial means of applicants” (Para 6(b)(i)). This is why a homemaker or a student is usually refused a primary card. |
| Your other limits count. | The issuer must consider “all the limits enjoyed by the cardholder from other entities” (Para 6(b)(ii)). Cards you already hold reduce what a new bank will give you. |

What income do issuers ask for?
We do not publish a table of issuer-by-issuer income cut-offs. That is deliberate. Banks do not publish those numbers in a uniform, dated form, and the figures that circulate online are sales-team folklore. Quoting them would give you a false sense of a rule that does not exist.
What we can tell you is how the number is built. The issuer starts from your net monthly income. It subtracts your existing EMIs and the minimum due on cards you already hold. What is left is your capacity to service a new limit. Salaried income clears this faster than self-employed income, because it is easier to verify.
Two things move the bar more than salary does. One is your employer category. Large listed companies and government bodies sit in the top band at most issuers. The other is whether you already bank with the issuer. A pre-approved offer in your own bank’s app is judged on your account history, not a fresh income check.
What credit score do you need for a credit card?
Issuers pull your bureau score from CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF. There is no published pass mark. Higher is better, and the effect is not linear. A strong score does not just get you approved. It gets you a bigger limit at the same income.
The harder case is a first-time applicant. With no loans and no cards, you have no score at all. The bureau reports it as NH or NA, not as a low number. Many issuers treat that as a decline by default. We explain the fix on our pages on a credit score showing NH or NA and what counts as a good credit score.
Apply to one issuer at a time. Every application is a hard enquiry on your report. Several in one month reads as distress to the next lender. The difference is set out on our page on hard versus soft enquiries.
Which documents do you need for a credit card?
KYC for a card follows the RBI Master Direction on Know Your Customer. Para 3(a)(xiv) lists the six documents that count as an Officially Valid Document. You need one of these for identity.
| Purpose | What is accepted |
|---|---|
| Identity (any one OVD) | Passport; driving licence; proof of possession of Aadhaar number; Voter’s Identity Card; NREGA job card signed by a State Government officer; letter from the National Population Register |
| Address, if the OVD does not carry it | Utility bill not more than two months old (electricity, telephone, post-paid mobile, gas, water); property or municipal tax receipt; pension or family pension payment order; employer accommodation letter from a government body, PSU, scheduled bank, financial institution or listed company |
| Tax | PAN |
| Income, salaried | Recent salary slips and bank statement showing salary credit; Form 16 for some issuers |
| Income, self-employed | Filed income tax return and audited accounts; business proof such as GST registration |
Source: RBI Master Direction — Know Your Customer, read 6 September 2026. One catch worth knowing. If you use a substitute address proof, you must give the bank an OVD carrying your current address within three months. The income rows are issuer practice, not RBI text, so treat them as a checklist and confirm with your issuer.
Why do credit card applications get rejected?
Rejections cluster around a few causes. Most are fixable.
| # | Item | Details |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No credit history. | Nothing to score. Fix it with a secured card or a small consumer loan. |
| 2 | Address mismatch. | Your document address and your stated address differ. This is the most common silly failure. |
| 3 | Too much existing limit. | The issuer counts your other cards. Close one you do not use before you apply. |
| 4 | A recent default or a settled account. | A settlement marker sits on your report for years and blocks most issuers. |
| 5 | Income not verifiable. | Cash income is real income. It is not underwritable income. |
How do you get a card with no income proof?
Take a secured card against a fixed deposit. You place a deposit, the bank issues a card with a limit set against it, and the deposit keeps earning interest. The bank’s risk is close to zero, so approval is close to automatic. It reports to the bureaus like any other card, so it builds the history you lack.
This is the route for students, homemakers, new migrants and anyone with a thin file. Our list of FD-backed secured credit cards covers the options. After a year of clean repayment, an unsecured card becomes realistic. See our guide to first credit cards for what to move to.
An add-on card is the other route. RBI allows add-on cards for “persons specifically identified by the principal cardholder” (Para 7(e)). It is easy to get. But the liability stays with the principal cardholder, and it does not build your own file.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum age for a credit card in India?
The RBI Master Direction sets no explicit minimum age for a primary credit card. In practice issuers apply the age of contractual capacity, 18, and most set their own floor at 18 or 21. Add-on cards are permitted for people named by the principal cardholder, and issuers commonly allow these from a younger age.
Can I get a credit card without income proof?
Yes, through a card secured against a fixed deposit. The deposit is the collateral, so the issuer does not need to assess your income the usual way. Unsecured cards without income proof are rare, because RBI requires the issuer to assess your independent financial means.
Does applying for a credit card lower my credit score?
Each application creates a hard enquiry, which knocks a small amount off your score for a few months. One application is not a problem. Four in a month is. Check for a pre-approved offer in your own bank’s app first.
Can a bank issue me a card I did not apply for?
No. RBI prohibits unsolicited cards and upgrades outright, and requires your written consent before issue. If a card is sent anyway, do not activate it. Report it in writing and keep the acknowledgement.
