Hard vs Soft Enquiries

Which credit checks are visible to lenders, which cost you points, and what to do about one you did not make.

A hard enquiry is a lender pulling your credit report to decide on an application you made. A soft enquiry is you checking your own report, or an existing lender reviewing an account. Only hard enquiries are visible to other lenders, and only hard enquiries can move your score. Checking your own score never costs you a point, and you are entitled to one free full report a year from each bureau.

Hard and soft enquiries compared

  Hard enquiry Soft enquiry
Who pulls it A lender or card issuer you applied to You, or a lender reviewing an account you already hold
Typical trigger Loan application, credit card application, credit limit increase request Self-check, pre-approved offer screening, periodic account review
Visible to other lenders Yes No
Affects your score Yes, usually small and short-lived No
Needs your consent Yes Yes for a self-check; account reviews are covered by your loan agreement
Stays on the report Listed in the enquiry section of your report Shown only to you

“Hard” and “soft” are the credit bureaus’ own terms. They do not appear in the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act or in RBI circulars. So the exact treatment varies a little between CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark.

How many points does a hard enquiry cost?

No Indian bureau publishes that figure, and any site that gives you one has made it up. What is publishable is the mechanism.

Enquiries are one input into a score, and a minor one next to repayment history and credit utilisation. One application in a quiet year is close to invisible. Five applications in a fortnight is not, because the pattern reads as credit hunger. The model cannot tell whether you were rejected four times or approved four times. It only sees four lenders looking.

The effect also fades. A hard enquiry stops carrying weight long before it stops being listed. A single missed EMI will hurt you far more, and for far longer, than a handful of enquiries. If you are choosing what to worry about, worry about the payment history.

Does checking my own credit score lower it?

No. A self-check is a soft enquiry and no lender ever sees it. This applies whether you check through the bureau directly or through a bank or an app.

Since 26 April 2024 every credit information company must give individuals easy access to a Free Full Credit Report, including the credit score, once a year for January to December. The RBI told them to display the link “prominently on their website (on the Home page itself)”. Use it on all four bureaus, because lenders do not all pull from the same one. Our guide on the credit bureaus compared explains why the four scores differ.

How do I know if someone pulled my report?

You get a message. Under RBI circular RBI/2023-24/73 of 26 October 2023, “CICs shall send alerts through SMS/ email to customers when their Credit Information Report (CIR) is accessed by the Specified Users”. The rule took effect on 26 April 2024.

This is the most useful consumer protection in the whole area and almost nobody uses it. Make sure your mobile number and email are current with each bureau. An alert naming a lender you never approached is an early sign of an identity fraud or a mis-keyed PAN. That is worth acting on the same day.

What if there is an enquiry I never made?

Raise a dispute with the bureau. The RBI framework of 26 October 2023 gives you a hard timeline and money behind it. If your complaint is not resolved within 30 calendar days, you are entitled to compensation of “₹100 per calendar day”. The same framework says that “in cases of rejection, the reasons for rejection shall also be provided by CI and CIC”.

So a bureau or a bank cannot silently close your complaint. Ask for the reason in writing, and start counting days from the date you filed. Our page on how to dispute a credit report sets out the steps.

How do I shop for a loan without collecting enquiries?

Apply narrowly and late. Do the research first and submit once. Three habits do most of the damage:

  • Filling application forms on several aggregator sites in a week. Each one can trigger its own pull.
  • Clicking “check my eligibility” on offers that quietly run a full application.
  • Reapplying immediately after a rejection instead of fixing the cause. See why personal loans get rejected.

Pre-approved offers from your own bank are usually screened on a soft pull. They are the cheapest way to find out where you stand before a real application.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hard enquiry stay on my credit report?

Bureaus list enquiries in a dated section of the report and they age off over time. The influence on your score fades well before the entry disappears. Do not plan around a specific number of months, because the four Indian bureaus do not publish identical retention rules for enquiries.

Is a pre-approved offer a hard enquiry?

Usually not. Screening for a pre-approved offer is normally a soft pull by a lender you already bank with. It turns into a hard enquiry the moment you accept and a formal application begins. Read the consent text on the accept screen, because it is where the change happens.

Do multiple loan applications on the same day count as one enquiry?

In India, assume they do not. Rate-shopping windows that merge similar enquiries are a feature of some overseas scoring models. No Indian bureau publishes such a rule, so do not rely on one. Apply to one lender, wait for the decision, then move on.

Does a credit card limit increase trigger a hard enquiry?

If you request it, usually yes. If the issuer offers it, it is normally a soft review of an account you already hold. Note that an issuer cannot raise your limit on its own anyway. The RBI’s credit card Master Direction requires your explicit consent for any upgrade or limit increase.

Can I get an enquiry removed from my report?

Only if it is wrong. A genuine application you made stays. An enquiry you did not authorise is a data error and must be corrected through a dispute, with the 30-day timeline and the ₹100 a day compensation behind it. Improving the score around it is the faster path, as our guide on improving a credit score explains.
