A credit score of -1, or the notation NA or NH, means the bureau could not compute a score for you. It is not a zero and it is not a bad score. It means there is not enough reported borrowing history to score. That is a very different problem from a low score, and the fix is different too.
What does NA, NH or -1 actually mean?
A credit score is computed from what lenders report about you. No reported history means no inputs. So the bureau returns a placeholder instead of a number.
You will see one of these on your report.
| What you see | What it usually means | Applies to | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| NA | Not applicable. No credit history the bureau can use. | New borrowers, and people who have never held a loan or card | Your own free full credit report |
| NH | No history. Nothing reported in the scoring window. | People whose last loan closed years ago | Your own free full credit report |
| -1 | Too little history to score. | Files under about six months old | Your own free full credit report |
| A number from 300 to 900 | A real score. It can be read and compared. | Anyone with sufficient reported history | Your own free full credit report |
We are being careful with the wording. The bureaus label these codes slightly differently, and their public explanation pages block automated access, so we did not read them at source. Your own report prints the notation and its meaning. That copy is the one to trust.
Is no credit history worse than bad credit?
Usually not. A default sits on your report for years and tells a lender something specific. A blank file tells them nothing.
Lenders treat the two differently. A default triggers a rejection at the policy level. A blank file triggers manual review, or a smaller, secured offer.
So the blank file is a solvable problem. It usually clears in six to twelve months of reported repayment. A settlement or a write-off does not clear that fast.
Why do I have no credit history?
Four causes account for almost all cases.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| You have never borrowed. | A debit card, a salary account and a UPI history do not build a credit file. None of them are reported as credit. |
| Your only loan closed long ago. | Activity ages out of the scoring window, and the file goes quiet. |
| Your lender does not report to that bureau. | India has four bureaus and reporting is not uniform. You can be scored at one and unscored at another. |
| Your records are split. | A name spelling change, a new phone number or a second PAN entry can fragment a file. |
The third and fourth causes are the ones people miss. Pull all four reports before assuming you have no history at all. Our note on how the four bureaus differ explains why the numbers will not match.
What are my rights under the RBI rules?
The Master Direction — Reserve Bank of India (Credit Information Reporting) Directions, 2025, dated 6 January 2025, gives you specific entitlements. They are useful when a file is blank or wrong.
| Right | What the rule says | Why it matters here |
|---|---|---|
| One free full report a year | Each bureau must give you one free full credit report, including the score, once during January to December. | Costs nothing to check whether you are really unscored |
| Reporting four times a month | Since 1 July 2026, lenders must submit data as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and the last day of each month, within four calendar days (month-end file by the 5th of the next month). | New activity appears in weeks, not months |
| Alerts on access | Bureaus must send an SMS or email when a lender pulls your report, where contact details exist. | You learn about enquiries you did not authorise |
| 30-day complaint window | A correction request must be resolved within thirty calendar days in total. | A wrong entry can be removed on a clock |
| ₹100 a day compensation | If the complaint is not resolved in thirty days, you are paid ₹100 per calendar day of delay. | The delay has a price, and you can claim it |
The reporting-frequency rule is the practical one. It means a new secured card, paid on time, shows up on your report fast. If something is wrong rather than missing, follow the process in our guide to disputing a credit report.
How do I turn NA or NH into a real score?
You need one reported, well-behaved credit line. Nothing more complicated than that.
- Open a credit card backed by your own fixed deposit. Approval does not depend on a score, because your deposit is the security. Our list of secured credit cards covers the options.
- Spend a small amount each month. Keep usage well under the limit.
- Pay the full statement balance, on or before the due date, every month.
- Check your free report after six months. A score should now exist.
- Only then apply for an unsecured card or a loan.
Two things to avoid. Do not apply to several lenders at once, because each application leaves an enquiry. And do not open a credit line you do not need, since a missed payment on it is worse than no history at all.
If you are starting from nothing, our guide to building credit from scratch sets out the same path in more detail. If your file is not blank but damaged, read what actually moves a score instead.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a loan with an NA or NH credit score?
Sometimes, but the offer will be smaller and more expensive. Secured lending is the realistic route, such as a loan against a fixed deposit or gold. Some lenders also assess salary account inflows directly. An unsecured personal loan on a blank file is unlikely.
Is -1 a bad credit score?
No. It is not on the 300 to 900 scale at all. It signals that the bureau has too little data to score you. Reading it as a very low score is the common mistake, and it leads people to try fixes they do not need.
How long does it take to get a credit score?
Around six months of reported activity is the usual answer, because a scoring model needs a repayment pattern to read. Since lenders now report four times a month, the underlying data arrives quickly. The wait is for enough months of history, not for the reporting.
Does using UPI or a debit card build my credit score?
No. Neither is credit, so neither is reported to a bureau. The same is true of paying rent or utility bills directly. Only borrowing that a lender reports counts.
I had a loan ten years ago. Why does my report say NH?
Old, closed accounts eventually fall outside the scoring window. The file then reads as having no current history. One new, well-managed credit line restores a score.
