Building Credit From Scratch

How to get your first credit account with no score, what moves the number in six months, and your rights if the report is wrong.

You cannot build a credit score without a credit account. There is no way around that. A bureau can only score repayment behaviour it can see, so somebody has to lend you something first. The fastest honest route is a credit card backed by a fixed deposit. Open it at a bank you already hold money with. Then pay it in full every month for six months.

Six months is the realistic first milestone, not a rule written anywhere. Bureaus need several months of reported repayment before they can produce a score rather than a “no history” marker. Until then your report shows NH or NA, which is not a bad score. It is the absence of one.

Why do you have no credit score at all?

Because nothing has been reported about you. A credit information company builds your report from what lenders send it. If you have never held a loan or a credit card, there is nothing to send. Salary, savings, a fixed deposit and a debit card generate no bureau data whatsoever.

This catches people out at the worst moment. A first home loan is refused not because the score is low, but because there is no score. The lender has nothing to price. Our page on NH and NA in a credit report explains what those codes mean.

What is the fastest way to get your first credit account?

Rank the options by how likely you are to be approved with no history, not by how attractive the product is.

Route Why it gets approved What to watch
Credit card against a fixed deposit The bank holds a lien on your deposit, so income proof and a bureau score are not required Your deposit is locked until the card is closed
Add-on card on a family member’s account Approved on the primary cardholder’s credit, not yours Reporting practice varies; confirm the card is reported in your name
A small consumer durable or two-wheeler EMI Small ticket, secured by the asset, widely offered at point of sale Zero-cost EMI often carries a processing fee; it is a real loan on your report
Entry-level card from your salary bank The bank can see your salary credits even if the bureau cannot A rejection is a hard enquiry and sits on your report

Do not apply to four lenders at once to see who says yes. Each application is a hard enquiry, and a cluster of them reads as distress. Apply to one, wait for the answer, then move. See hard versus soft enquiries.

What behaviour actually moves the score in the first six months?

Two things, and they are boring. Pay the full statement amount on or before the due date, every single month. And keep your usage low relative to your limit — under about a third is a sensible working target.

Paying only the minimum keeps your account current but leaves a revolving balance, and it costs you real interest. The RBI makes card issuers warn you about this. Paying only the minimum “would result in the repayment stretching over months / years with consequential compounded interest”. The wording is from the RBI Master Direction on Credit Card and Debit Card. Treat the minimum as an emergency valve, never a plan.

One more thing helps and costs nothing: do not close the first card once your score arrives. Length of history is an input, and your oldest account is the one carrying it.

When should you first check your report, and what does it cost?

Check it before you apply for anything, and check it again about eight weeks after your first card is issued. You want to confirm the account has actually been reported. Lenders do miss this, and an unreported account builds nothing.

The RBI requires each credit information company to give every individual one free full credit report a year. Use all four. They hold different data, because not every lender reports to every bureau, and an error can sit in one report and not the others. Our comparison of the credit bureaus covers who reports where.

What happens if the report is wrong?

You dispute it, and there is now a clock and a price attached. Under the RBI’s compensation framework, a complaint must be settled within 30 calendar days. The lender gets 21 of those days. The bureau gets the rest. If it is not, you are owed ₹100 for every calendar day of delay. It must reach your bank account within five working days of the fix.

That framework was notified on 26 October 2023 and took effect six months later, on 26 April 2024 (RBI notification). Very few people claim the compensation, because very few know it exists. File the dispute in writing and keep the date stamp. Our guide to a credit report dispute sets out the steps.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to build a credit score from zero?

Expect about six months of reported repayment before a usable score appears. Allow a year before it is strong enough for a large loan. There is no way to compress this. The score is a record of time plus behaviour, and only one of those two is under your control.

Does a debit card, a salary account or a fixed deposit build credit?

No. None of them is a credit account, so none is reported to the bureaus. Paying rent and utility bills on time does not build a credit score in India either. Only borrowing and repaying does.

Is it bad to have no credit score?

It is not bad in the way a low score is bad, but it is a problem. A lender with no data on you must either refuse or price for the unknown, and pricing for the unknown means a higher rate. If a home loan is two years away, open a small credit line now rather than then.

Should a student get a credit card?

Yes, if it is a secured or entry-level card and the bill is paid in full every month. Starting the clock early is worth more than any reward programme. The risk is not the card, it is revolving a balance on it. See student credit cards.

Will taking a personal loan build my score faster than a card?

It adds a second account type, which helps a little, but it is an expensive way to buy credit history. You pay interest for the whole tenure to build a record a fully paid credit card builds for free. Use a card first, and borrow when you actually need to borrow.
