Credit Score Needed for a Credit Card

The score each card tier expects, from a secured card at zero to 800 for super-premium.

Across the 16 cards in our database, the minimum credit score issuers work to runs from 700 for an entry-level card to 800 for a super-premium one. Most mid-range cards sit at 720 to 750. One card in the set, a secured card against a fixed deposit, needs no score at all.

Those numbers come from our own card data, checked as of 15 August 2026. Treat them as the floor at which an application becomes worth making. They are not a promise of approval, and that distinction is the whole point of this page.

What credit score do you need, by card tier?

Tier Minimum score in our data Example card Minimum salaried income in our data
Secured, against a fixed deposit No score required SBI Card Unnati No minimum stated
Entry-level, no fee 700 Amazon Pay ICICI ₹3,00,000
Everyday cashback 720 Axis ACE ₹3,60,000
Mainstream rewards 730 Tata Neu Infinity HDFC ₹6,00,000
Premium travel 750 Axis Atlas ₹9,00,000
Super-premium 800 HDFC Infinia ₹36,00,000

Read the last column alongside the score column. Income does at least as much work as the score at the top of the range. A score of 810 with a salary of ₹6,00,000 will not get you a super-premium card, because the income floor is the binding constraint.

Why a good score still gets rejected

The bureau score is one input into an issuer’s own scorecard. The scorecard also weighs your income, how stable it is, your employer category, your city, how many cards you already hold, and how much of your existing limit you use.

Three common rejections have nothing to do with the score. Too many recent applications, because each one leaves a hard enquiry. Very high utilisation on an existing card, because it reads as stress. And a thin file, where the score is fine but there is almost no repayment history behind it.

A thin file is the frustrating one. You cannot build history without credit, and you cannot get credit without history. A secured card against a fixed deposit breaks that loop, which is what SBI Card Unnati is for.

How to check your score before applying

You are entitled to one free full credit report a year from each bureau, including the score. That entitlement is in RBI’s Credit Information Reporting Directions, 2025, issued on 6 January 2025. It runs on a January to December cycle.

An amendment to the same directions, in force since 1 July 2026, changed how current the data is. Credit institutions must now report as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and the last day of each month. They must file the 9th, 16th and 23rd updates within four calendar days, and the month-end file by the 5th of the next month. So a loan you closed can show as settled within about a week, not a quarter.

Check the report, not only the number. If something is wrong, the directions give a 30-day resolution window. The credit institution gets 21 days and the bureau gets the remaining nine. If it runs past 30 days, you are owed ₹100 for each further calendar day. Our page on the credit report dispute process walks through the filing.

How to move your score before you apply

Two levers move fastest. Bring utilisation down by paying before the statement date, not just before the due date. And stop applying for anything for six months, so recent enquiries age out.

Everything else is slow. Payment history is the largest factor and it only improves with time. Age of accounts improves by closing nothing. The detail is in our guides to the factors affecting your score and how to improve it. You can model a change with the score simulator.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a credit card with a 650 score?

Not from the cards in our database. The lowest floor we hold is 700. A secured card against a fixed deposit is the realistic route at 650, and it reports to the bureaus like any other card.

What is a good CIBIL score for a credit card?

750 opens almost every mainstream card in our data. 800 is what a super-premium card expects. Below 700, expect either a secured card or a rejection.

Does checking my own score lower it?

No. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry. Only an application by a lender creates a hard enquiry, and that is what shows on your file.

How long after a rejection should I reapply?

Give it six months, and fix the reason first. Reapplying quickly adds another hard enquiry to a file that has just been judged weak.

Which card is easiest to get approved for?

A secured card issued against your own fixed deposit. The issuer is holding your money, so the score matters far less. It is also the standard way to start a file.
