What that costs in rupees
On ₹5,00,000 over 5 years:
| At this rate | EMI | Interest |
|---|---|---|
| 9.99% — the advertised rate | ₹10,621 a month | ₹1,37,264 total interest |
| 22.00% — the published maximum | ₹13,809 a month | ₹1,91,304 extra interest |
Principal and interest only. Processing fee, GST, documentation and any insurance sold alongside the loan are additional — those are set out on the Axis Bank personal loan fees and charges page. Run your own amount and tenure on the EMI calculator.
How it compares
Axis Bank is the joint cheapest of the 8 providers we track for a personal loan, level with HDFC Bank at 9.99%. Among the other private banks in our set, IDFC First Bank also starts at 9.99%, Kotak Mahindra Bank at 10.99% and ICICI Bank at 9.99%. The standing table for every lender is on personal loan interest rates.
What moves this rate
Axis Bank is a private sector bank. Floating retail loans are priced off an external benchmark, so RBI rate cuts pass through within a reset cycle.
Personal loan rate ranges are much wider than home loan ranges. The reason is simple: nothing backs the loan. There is no property to recover, so the rate has to cover the whole risk. A bank advertising from around 10% can quote more than double that to someone with a thin credit history.
The tenure is much shorter than a home loan, usually five or six years. That keeps your total interest down but pushes the EMI up. Check the early-closure terms before you sign — being able to prepay without a charge is worth more than a small difference in the rate, and what lenders may and may not levy is covered in loan foreclosure and charges.
